NEW
DEGREE COURSE: STUDY PROGRAMME
The
new degree course is divided up into two “cycles”:
- The 1 st cycle of three
years' duration should enable each student to master the fundamental
elements of theory and technique and elaborate his or her artistic
objectives, culminating in a 1 st -cycle degree.
- The 2
nd cycle of two years' duration, which prepares students to take
a DNSAP degree in the visual
arts (diplôme national supérieur d'arts plastiques),
is enriched by opportunities for international exchange and work
placement (internships) during the 4 th year of study and reinforced
by a seminar for 5 th -year students.

ST CYCLE
During
their 1 st year of study , students are guided
and supervised by a faculty team of four teachers: François
Boisrond, Jacky Chriqui, Didier Semin and Patrick Tosani. Each student
meets with the faculty team at the end of the 1st semester to review
his or her progress. By the end of the school year each student
should have gained at least the following four credits:
- 1 studio credit
- 1 theory credit
- 1 drawing credit
1
1 st -year computer science credit
This
1st -year computer science credit is accorded upon completion of
two training modules and four “ rendez-vous numériques
”, or “digital workshops”.
-
The 1st module, called “ stage environnement informatique ”,
takes one half- day in the month of October. Students are notified
at the time of enrolment as to the session to which they are assigned.
The object of this module is to acquaint newcomers to Ensba with
our Digital
Technologies
Section ( pôle numérique or PN) and how it
works as well as with the school's computer infrastructure (network,
e-mail, intranet). This module also includes a review of computer
terminology and a presentation of the rules for using the PN infrastructure.
-
The 2nd module, called “PAO” (i.e. “Desktop Publishing”), takes
7 half-days during the second semester. The objective of this module
is for students to acquire the requisite knowhow to produce a printed
portfolio presenting their work. The tuition addresses questions
of layout, digitalizing documents, image editing and printing.
-The
rendez-vous numériques (“digital workshops”) are lectures
showing how to use digital equipment in an artistic context. The
lecturer will present each phase of a project already realized,
focusing on the technical procedures involved and the artistic objectives.
He or she will also discuss various aspects of the use of the equipment.
Eight different workshops are held every year, each 1st-year student
should attend at least 4 of them. They take place in the lecture
hall at the Palais des Études the 1 st week of every month
from November through June. To obtain a computer science credit,
students must attend the 2 training modules and 4 rendez-vous numériques
over the course of the academic year and have passed the written
examination held in May. A 1st -year computer science credit is
a prerequisite for moving up to 2nd -year studies at Ensba.
-
1 studio credit corresponding to the year-end results
presented by each student to the faculty team for the coordination
of the 1 st -year programme and in the presence of his or her studio
head. A studio credit is a prerequisite moving up to 2nd -year studies
at Ensba.
In
2005-2006, foreign language instruction will be offered to 1 st
-year students. These courses will be graded and for credit.
In
their 2 nd year at
Ensba, students must earn at least four credits:
- 1 theory credit
- I techniques credit
- 1 drawing credit
- 1 studio credit
corresponding
to the submission of a portfolio (A3 format maximum) of the student's
art work and an interview with a panel of Ensba faculty. If the
student is failed, he or she must gain this credit in the 1 st semester
of the following year. In case of renewed failure, the student will
not be eligible for a 1st -cycle degree though he or she will be
permitted to repeat the year.
In their third year
students must
gain two credits:
- 1 theory credit
- 1 techniques or work placement
credit At the end of the academic year, students apply for a 1st
-cycle degree. This involves a review of the student's scholastic
performance, the presentation of a selection of works that are representative
of his or her first three years of study, and an interview with
the examining committee. The committee is made up of one Ensba faculty
member and two outside examiners. A 1st -cycle degree is a prerequisite
for the continuation of one's studies at Ensba.
To
be eligible for a 1 st -cycle degree, students must have at least
10 documented course credits by the end of their 3 rd year (2 studio
credits, 2 drawing credits, 1 1 st -year computer
science credit, 3 theory credits, 2 techniques credits or 1 techniques
credit and 1 work placement credit).
2
ND
CYCLE
In
their fourth year ,
students are confronted with the outside world, either within the
framework of international exchange or work placement (internships).
A report on the
student's work placement or study abroad is required for credit.
4
th -year students must gain three credits:
- 1 theory credit
- 1 credit for work
placement or study abroad
- 1 elective credit
(techniques or theory)
In
their fifth year ,
students are not required to gain credits, but are offered seminar-type
courses instead. Students are expected to take their degree (DNSAP)
in the course of this fith year of study. In case of failure, they
may reapply for the degree within a period of not more than one
year.
To
be eligible for a DNSAP, students must have at least 13 documented
course credits by the end of their 5 th year (2 studio credits,
2 drawing credits, 1 1 st -year computer science credit, 4 theory
credits, 2 techniques credits and 1 credit for work placement or
study abroad or 1 techniques credit and 2 credits for work placement
or study abroad, 1 elective credit in techniques or theory).

This
degree course applies to students enrolled in their 5 th year or
more at Ensba in 20052006. These students must gain at least two
– and not more than three – credits each year.
To
be eligible for a DNSAP degree, students must have at least 12 documented
course credits by the end of their 5 th year (1 studio credit, 2
drawing credits, 4 theory credits, 3 techniques credits and 1 credit
for work placement related to their own creative work
–
this training may take place in France or abroad – and 1 elective
credit to be chosen from amongst all the courses in artistic techniques
or theory or work placement schemes recognized by Ensba).
(It
should be borne in mind that third-year students who have failed
their 2 nd -year assessment are required to reapply and pass the
assessment in the course of their 3 rd year. If such a student's
work is still deemed unsatisfactory, he or she may not continue
studying at Ensba.) Should a
student
fail to obtain the degree, he or she will be issued a certificate
indicating the courses taken at Ensba.
CREDIT
REQUIREMENTS
Students
must register for credits at the Accueil Scolarité (Registrar's
Offi
ce) from January 16 to February 17, 2006 . Credit for drawing
classes is subject to an ongoing assessment and requires
diligent course participation. Techniques credits are
conferred for courses given in the Department of Artistic
Techniques and in the Digital Technologies and
printmaking/Bookmaking Sections . Student assessment
is usually on an ongoing basis, with final examinations in certain
courses. The course requirements will be specified by each instructor.
There are no exams in September for techniques credits
Techniques
credit for courses in the Digital Technologies Section
To
obtain credit for courses in the Digital Technologies Section,
you must first
pass the equivalent of three modules of Digital Technologies training
and subsequently, in the follow-up to the project, obtain approval
from two Digital Technologies instructors concerning your original
work using the techniques you have learned. The object of this
training is to give Ensba students practical and technical experience
in the use of the new technologies, whether specialized in one
field
or diversified
in various fields
of the Digital Technologies. If so desired, you may take several
Digital Technologies courses for credit in the course of your
studies at Ensba.
Obtaining
credits in Digital Technologies:
- First you must take and
pass the equivalent of 3 Digital Technologies training modules.
Careful : certain courses only count for a half-module, others
count for two. To be certain of course unit value, consult
the list of courses distributed in the first
week of classes.
- Once the 3 modules have
been completed, you must formally register in the Digital Technologies
department from October to May. To register, see Christophe Thouvenot
in “Administrative-tasks” computer access.
- Registration involves indicating
on a form the 3 modules already completed (if not already used
to obtain a Digital Technologies
credit) and providing a written statement of plans for individual
studio work that will make use of the techniques learned in the
modules indicated. Registration application to be turned in to
Digital Technologies Section head.
- Once you have registered,
your individual studio project will be monitored by at
least one of the teachers whose modules you have completed. To
obtain the credit, you must present your work-in-progress at least
three times, and of these at least once in the framework of the
collective Digital Technologies review in the left gallery (for
dates see intranet site and announcement board).
-The
credit is obtained by ongoing assessment in the form of technical
project review by a specialist instructor of one of the three
completed modules. You are evaluated on degree of mastery of the
relevant technical procedure and investment in your project,
whether completed or in progress. Theory credits generally
depend on the results of final
written and oral examinations; a term paper may also be required
in the course of the school year. Students
referred in June may resit
these exams in September, except for those seeking credit for
courses in cinema studies and in the history of Ensba's art collections.
WORK
PLACEMENT/STUDY ABROAD
1 st
-year students cannot earn work placement or study abroad credit.
Work placement/study abroad periods are arranged
either as part of international exchange programs or through formal
agreement with
professional
institutions or organizations. Credit is awarded after student
has submitted a written report on his or her internship
or study abroad period.
Professional
work placement credits may be earned in France
or abroad, in a variety of art and cultural institutions and organizations
(galleries, art centers, schools). Placement may be proposed
by Ensba or suggested by students themselves.
Old
degree course :
For 5th-year students, length of work placement period must be
the equivalent of 140 hours minimum; that is, 1 month working
full time, 2 months half time, or 3 months part time.
New
degree course :
For 3rd -year 1st -cycle students, work placement period is the
same as above: a minimum of 140 hours; that is, 1 month working
full time, 2 months half time or 3 months part time.
NB:
This credit does not exempt students from the compulsory 4 th
-year professional internship unless they are participating in
an exchange programme with an art school.
For
4th-year 2nd cycle students, the professional internship is compulsory
if they are not participating in an exchange programme with one
of the art schools that Ensba has a partnership agreement with.
Length of internship must be the equivalent of 10 weeks minimum
= 2 and 1/2 months working full time, 5 months half time, 6 months
or more part time.
NB:
No credit will be given for work placement or study abroad without
the prior permission and signed authorization of the host institution
and Ensba.
For
further information, contact Astrid Vicherat at the Médiathèque
- Tel. 01 47 03 50 35.
Credit
for study at art schools abroad :
Courses may be taken abroad for credit within the framework of the
Socrates programme or at art schools overseas with which Ensba has
made such arrangements. For more information contact the
Services des Relations Internationales (International Relations
Department): Tel.: 01 47 03 50 75. Credit for study abroad is awarded
upon confirmation
by the host establishment of successful completion of courses
and Ensba approval of student's written report on this period of
study.
Re-registration
Continuing
your studies at Ensba requires obtaining the compulsory credits
and is subject to the discretion of your studio head, who may bar
your re-registration in case of markedly and repeatedly unsatisfactory
results. The Director of Ensba will decide such cases after consulting
with the re-registration committee.
DIPLÔME
DE 1 ER CYCLE (1 ST -CYCLE DEGREE)
To
be eligible for a Diplôme de 1 er Cycle, students must have
earned at least 10 credits (2 studio credits, 2 drawing credits,
the 1 st -year computer science credit, 3 theory credits, 2 techniques
credits or 1 techniques credit and 1 work placement credit). The
degree is awarded on the basis of the student's overall scholastic
performance, presentation of a selection of signi ficant
work done during the three years of study, and an interview
with the examining committee, composed of one Ensba faculty member
and two outside examiners. Students who fail to obtain a degree
will be issued a certi ficate
of studies.
DIPLÔME
NATIONAL SUPÉRIEUR D'ARTS PLASTIQUES (DNSAP)
To
be eligible for a DNSAP degree, students must have gained at least
12 credits (as per the old degree course) or 13 credits (new degree
course), as the case may be. A DNSAP is conferred at the end of
a student's academic career at Ensba for the entirety of his or
her studies here. Barring special arrangements to the contrary for
6th-year students (see School Regulations, Chapter 3, section B,
clause 4), students may only apply for a DNSAP twice. The examining
committee has five members: one Ensba faculty
member
chosen by the candidate and four outside examiners appointed by
the Director of Ensba. Honours: A DNSAP may be awarded with honours
by unanimous or majority vote of the examining committee. Students
who fail to obtain a degree will be issued a certificate
of studies.
